Are you the carrot, the egg, or the coffee?
We’re not talking about food here, but about change. Change happens, and sometimes it’s so radical that it turns your life upside down. You’re transformed in the process and become a completely different person.
My transformative change came through a brain tumor. My whole life shifted, and I had to reinvent myself. Suddenly I was divorced and unable to do my job as a scientist. I honestly didn’t think I’d survive the ordeal.
I was recently sharing my story with a new friend, Diana, who is the author of the book Inspiritismo. I haven’t read her book yet, but after talking with her and getting to know her better, I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
After listening to my story, Diana said, “You are like the coffee.”
Of course I had no idea what she was talking about, so she went on to tell me this story:
“My dad told me once that people have a choice: they can be like the carrot, the egg, or the coffee. The carrot is hard, but when you put it in boiling water, it soon becomes limp. The boiling water permanently changes the consistency of the carrot.
The egg is different. When you put a whole egg into boiling water, the outside appears unchanged, but the inside changes radically, becoming solid.
Finally, you have the coffee. What happens when you put coffee into boiling water? It transforms the water into one of the most delicious and coveted drinks in the universe.”

I realized Diana’s story was a metaphor for how people react differently to change. All three of them, the carrot, the egg, and the coffee, had faced the same circumstances, but their reactions were very different.
a) Carrot: The carrot went into the boiling water strong, but came out softened and weak. Like the carrot, some people are defeated by change. Their life becomes ruled by the loss of what once was, and they never fully recover.
b) Egg: The egg started out fragile, but after being boiled, its insides became hardened. People who react to change in this way are seemingly able to carry on with their lives, but they are forever changed on the inside.
c) Coffee: Unlike the other two, the coffee wasn’t defeated or hardened by the ordeal, but became the cause of positive change in the boiled water. The coffee is symbolic of people who go through change and are better for it. Even when things are at their worst, they strive to be happy, to change the circumstances and become more aware of life.
Now I know why Diana called me “the coffee.” My life did change—drastically—and somehow I was able to use that change as an opportunity to change myself. There were times when I didn’t think I could do it, but I did, and I’m better for it.
Change is part of our lives, no matter how hard we avoid it. So how will you react to change?
