When I was in graduate school and in the process to designing my research project, I had to do something that is called a ‘Literature Review’.
A literature review is a critical and in-depth evaluation of previous work carried out on the subject you want to work on. A good literature review expands upon the reasons behind selecting a particular research question and the techniques and protocols that might help you further your research question.
Without previous research, you wouldn’t know where to start and what to do. Science is built upon the work and research of others. On many occasions, I found myself trying to make an experiment work. Sometimes the experiment worked beautifully sometimes it didn’t. In the latter case, I had to go back to the literature and review my process; sometimes I had to contact a particular researcher and asked them for their advice. As I was looking for solutions to my problem, I was looking for someone that already solved that problem.
Outside of my academic world, I have found myself trying to find someone that already solved my problem, whatever that problem may be, so I can ask for advice and use his or her experience as inspiration. The solution to my problem might be simple, but without the help of others it would take a lot longer to solve, if ever.
So there is an incredible value in asking for advice, but we must have the right mindset to hear what they have to say.

As a graduate student, having the right mentors, and looking outside my network for solutions to my problem was key for me as it is for the thousands of students that complete their graduate work every year.
