If you told me a few years ago that I would be married with a beautiful child and living a fulfilled life, I would have laughed at you—really. In 2003 I was in a bad place, and I thought my life was pretty much over, I was so afraid of the unknown. It turns out that my life wasn’t over, and in fact it, it was just beginning. My best years have been from 2003 up to now, and I had never saw it coming.
When we’re down in it, going through the really tough times in our lives, we often have a hard time imagining we’ll make it through. But somehow, we find a way. Take a moment now and try to remember the worst time of your life. Remember that day, that time? Remember how you felt and how hard it was? But what happened? You made it through. And here you are today, reading this blog post, and probably realizing you’d completely forgotten about that horrible time in your life. You probably remember being so afraid then. But you were able to overcome that fear, and now you are here today. You see, that ability to overcome fear and move past it is a sign that you are stronger than you think you are. Isn’t that an amazing feeling?
Because I am an athlete, my best analogies always come back to race day. I remember one of the most fearful times in my life was when I did my first Ironman triathlon. I was standing on the sand overlooking a vast ocean in Panama City Beach, Florida, the site of Ironman Florida, and I could feel fear trying to overwhelm me. I wasn’t alone; I could see the same fear in the other participant’s faces and movements. I could smell it. Many of them were toeing the line for the first buy viagra 50mg time, just like I was. Some people were crying, some were shaking, though it was warm outside. We were all afraid of taking on this massive event for the first time—a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and then a full marathon. I was afraid that I wasn’t going to be able to swim 2.4 miles, let alone finish the entire event. It helped to know that I wasn’t alone and that so many others around me were equally afraid. We all knew what needed to be done—the only thing there was to do—and that was to start. You see, whenever you are afraid, if you simply start doing what you are afraid of, you will get better at it, and soon enough, you won’t be afraid anymore. You are strong enough to handle anything, but the secret is to start.

As the cannon signaled the start of the race and I, along with the other 2000+ participants, started to swim, my fears disappeared. Suddenly, I found myself doing the thing I was afraid of. And I was making progress too. Small progress, but progress nevertheless. As the time passed, and I became more comfortable in the swim, the fear I’d felt earlier was replaced by a feeling of joy. I wasn’t afraid anymore. I was doing something. I was swimming, and I knew I could handle it.
If you knew you could handle anything that came your way, what would there be to fear? What would you do if you weren’t afraid? I think about this all the time. I have fears, just like everyone else, but I am working on knowing and convincing myself that I am strong enough to handle whatever comes my way, and so should you. We are stronger than we think we are, and we can handle it.
