Do you remember when you were a kid, when Christmas was around the corner you were so excited? You waited for this time for so long and now it was finally here, time to open gifts. Christmas was a really awesome time of the year back home; we opened gifts, and enjoyed the family. Between Christmas and New Years, the air was festive and as kids, it was the best time of the year. Then January would come and all of the sudden we had to go back to school, and start a new year. Waiting for the next Christmas took sooooo long and as a kid our perception of time was different, but as an adult it is a totally different animal. The Holidays are already here and last Christmas feels like yesterday, the perception of time changes, as we grow older.
Every year, early in January we promise to do something new, our new year’s resolutions. A series of commitments that we make to ourselves that unfortunately most of us fail to keep. This year I will do such and such, I will go to the gym more often, I will stop overreacting, I will start running, etc etc. As soon as the New Year rolls in, most of us have already failed to keep those resolutions.
This year I wanted to do something else, in addition to making new year’s goals (I don’t call them resolutions), I want to grade myself on my performance this past year. I attended a talk no long ago given by Marshall Goldsmith, a very successful author and executive coach. Every evening, he pays an associate to call him and ask a series of questions that force him to recap whether he has been true to his behavioral intentions as he went through the day’s events. - Did I do my best to find meaning?

- Did I do my best to build positive relationships?

I decided to ask myself these questions to evaluate not just my day, but also my entire year. I think that by looking back where have we been, what have we accomplished and what did we fail to do is a way to chart a baseline. Knowing this information will help me plan my next year with resolutions that are thought out, meaningful, and aren’t impulse driven.
The end of the year is just around the corner and soon you will be busy thinking about what gifts to give, travel arrangements to make, decorations to put up. You won’t have time to give the necessary time to think about what you have done this year and what you should have done differently. I started to think about what I did this year and if I am happy with my progress. I am beginning to strategize and build myself realistic goals for next year; it is just around the corner.
