When was the last time you asked yourself “What do I want to be?”

As I child, I grew up in a third world country. We were poor, but one thing was important for my parents. We would go to school no matter what. When people would ask me what my life goals were or  I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was I want to be a shoe shining boy. I wasn’t thinking of becoming a doctor, a lawyer, a fireman or any of those things. I just wanted to be a shoe shining boy.  Why? Because shoe shining boys didn’t go to school, they would play ball all the time (whenever they weren’t shining shoes) and they had money to spend.

Kids want to be this and that because that is what is appealing to them. As adults things aren’t any different. It is just that as adults we stop dreaming and seeing ourselves as what we want to be. We overthink, we like comfort and the status quo and we are afraid to go after what want. My life turned out rather well, but I think that my finest hour has not yet arrived yet, my life goals aren't fulfilled yet.

As adults, we are in complete control of our destiny. We navigate our own ship and have two outcomes: Arriving into a glorious sunset or crashing and watching the ship sink. This scenario appeals to many and scares the crap out of the rest.

However, we settle on the status quo and sometimes we forget priligy that there is so much more we can accomplish, in fact, you will always be able to reach for something else no matter at what stage of your life we are in. The "What do you want to be?” question is about everything from job interviews to financial plans, and while it seems cliché, it’s common for a reason: it works. It's one of those rather difficult questions, and in most cases it's pretty much impossible to answer in a concrete way. But sometimes just trying to answer the question is all you need to make progress toward your ultimate goal.

As I think about what I want to be, I am also thinking of the two following two questions

  1. Does my work matter?
  2. Am I making a difference?

These two questions, at least for me have been a key to knowing that I am in the right path. And just this morning I got to read an article on Entrepreneur magazine. It lists 5 steps that will contribute to success. I think this list is spot on morphing into who do you want to be.

What do you want to be is perhaps one of the most life-defining questions you want to ask yourself at any time. What you really don’t want to do is throw away your years. Wake up one day and realize the things you cared about most were not what you devoted your life to. That you have missed your opportunity.
