We’ve all heard this statement before, “Just follow your passion, and you will succeed.” But what if your passion is not something that will sustain you financially? Case in point: my passion is running and endurance sports, but I don’t think I will be ever make a living as a professional runner. I’m too old for that. So when it comes to supporting yourself financially as a full-time passion seeker, the “just” part of this statement is really misleading.
However, finding a passion of yours and translating the skills, self-confidence, and happiness you gain into something else is totally doable. You can bring the benefits you reap from pursuing your passion into your work, and that will lead to more success.
I love to run and do endurance events. There is something amazing that happens to you when you are at mile 80 of a 100-mile run and you think you can no longer continue, but you are in the middle of the wilderness and the only way out is the next aid station six miles from where you are. Somehow you find it within your heart to continue to the next aid station, and when you get there, you say, “Ok, I can make it to the next aid station.” That passion of mine translates into a willpower that enables me to continue and finish 100 miles, but also allows me to see my work and life from a different perspective, a perspective and a mindset that will enable me to continue and do anything despite the conditions. I recently did Ironman Texas. While I was running, I knew in my mind that the race was long enough for me to sit down if I needed to, to compose myself, and keep on going. I’d still have plenty of time to finish under the time limit. Lucky for me, I never felt a single moment of despair, but I was ready for it if it did happen. Your passion will give you that—the confidence that you can endure anything, and that you will continue your path no matter how hard it seems to be.

As an executive coach, I’ve encountered people who feel stuck in their jobs, not making any progress. I’ve helped a few to find their passion, a hobby for some, which has translated into breaking from the situation in which they have found themselves by introducing something new and magical into their lives. In other cases, I’ve helped business owners renew their passion for their work. Some of them went into business to change the world, be their own bosses, or express their creative sides. Somewhere along the way, their passion got lost between establishing product lines, websites, employee manuals, call scripts, business metrics, processes and legal documents. By getting reacquainted with their passion, they were able to break the mold and re-energize their careers and their businesses.

There is very little overlap between his personal life and his work life, yet he is extremely successful with both. Why? Because he knows he is creating his own happiness. He has both passion and success. And they are only related in so much as happy people tend to perform better.
Lesson learned: Finding your passion at work? Not a requirement for success. Pursuing your passion, no matter what it is, and funneling that energy into the work you do? Now that’s how to build a career.
